This windmill pumps using air and air pressure.

One bar of air pressure is required to lift water 10m, ie 5 bar for 50m

The deeper the pump is placed below water level, the more water it will pump but it requires more pressure the deeper it is

As a guideline water can be pumped from double the height that the pump has been submerged below the water level.

FOR EXAMPLE

If the pump is 10m below the water level, water is easily pumped 20m-30m above the water level (not the ground surface level of the borehole)

This type of pump is not recommended to go below 50m below the water level

Ensure you choose a site near the windmill where the wind is best.

It doesn’t matter how far the pump is from the windmill – the cost of distance is the cost of airpipe – est R250 per 30 metres.

We have erected a windmill on a hill 150 metres from the borehole with amazing results.

  1. Fill the pole with cement. The pole will be more rigid and far stronger. Even drymix will work.
  2. Stabilising bars at the base in the concrete. underground will add significant strength
  3. Use an old windmill stand.
  1. If a borehole runs dry it cannot damage the water pump.
  2. Dirty water, muddy water, or sand will not damage the water pump.
  3. The water pump can be used to clean a bore hole.
  4. Saline, acid, or alkaline water will not damage the water pump.
  1. Bury the airpipe if cattle have access to it.
  2. Porcupines have been known to chew the airpipe.
  1. The pressure gauge can be used to measure the pressure in the entire system or the pressure produced by the windmill and compressor section
  2. Should the windmill be pumping well but not producing water – it is an air leak
  3. If the windmill and compressor (above ground) section is making pressure the air leak will be below ground
  4. Usual operation – The gauge will rise to a point at start up and then drop to a running pressure
  5. The gauge will also give an indication of the depth of water in the borehole (approx 1 bar per 10m)

The windmill is designed that most spare parts are available from the local co-op.You can repair it yourself.

No expensive call outs!

  1. In times or seasons of no wind – use alternative air pressure sources to pump water.
  2. Simply attach the airpipe from the borehole to the compressor (petrol driven compressor OR generator and compressor)
  3. In times of poor wind the pump can be also raised in the borehole to get some water.
  1. Install a jojo tank next to the borehole.
  2. Use gravity to move the water to another location.
  3. Raise the height of the pipe coming out of the borehole to enable gravity feeding to desired locations.
  1. Install a pole at other boreholes. If the cattle are no longer in the camp – move the windmill.
  2. Extract the pipe and water pump from the borehole while the windmill is turning. The air pressure will naturally force the pump up.

TROUBLESHOOTING - No Water?

You’ve installed your new windmill but no water is coming out the pump…

  1. Have you had winds above 10km/h?
  2. Is the windmill blade turning?
  3. Is the compressor making a “pop pop” sound sound when the windmill is turning?

If YES to all of the above then check the following:

  1. Has the airpipe come off?
  2. Are there air leaks?
  3. Use the pressure gauge to confirm pressure (if the reading on the pressure gauge fall quickly to zero (0) then there is an air leak
  4. Can the windmill turn into the wind (is it too stiff to swivel?)
